Where there is smoke, there is fire consists of nine individual objects: silver-plated reproductions of antique stove tiles that together form the installation of a wall.

Historically, the fireplace occupied a central place in the living room and daily life, creating a communal atmosphere by providing warmth. Where there is smoke, there is fire directs attention to what lies behind this warmth and within the smoke.

The antique origin of the ceramic tiles refers to the past, while their reflective surface places them in a new context, creating a dual perception. The installation recognises the attraction one may feel towards familiarity, while simultaneously questioning what this connection is actually built on: projection, people-pleasing, and the effort to keep up appearances in order to stay within the warm environment.

Where there is smoke, there is fire explores the idea of imagined nostalgia, the awareness that the harmony we remember was never as perfect as it was presented to us at the time, or as it appears in hindsight.
